From Joburg to the World: How Tyla is Rewriting the Global Pop Playbook

The world belongs to Tyla, and we are all just living in it. Fresh off turning heads as one of the most mesmerizing sensations at the Met Gala in New York, Johannesburg’s very own pop princess is gearing up to conquer a completely different kind of arena—the biggest sporting event on the planet. FIFA has officially confirmed that the two-time Grammy winner is set to ignite the 2026 World Cup, booking her for unprecedented dual performances across two countries. On June 11, the "Water" hitmaker will headline the historic Estadio Azteca opening ceremony in Mexico City, right before Bafana Bafana takes on Mexico. Less than twenty-four hours later, she will jet across the border to light up Los Angeles’s SoFi Stadium, sharing a star-studded American lineup with the likes of Katy Perry, Future, and LISA. It’s a massive cultural milestone, placing South African Amapiano and global pop fusion squarely at the center of the world stage.

This whirlwind of stadium-sized success comes right as the singer continues to prove she is much more than a viral moment. While internet sleuths and tabloids are busy obsessing over a supposedly "awkward" Met Gala interaction with her longtime idol Rihanna—which sources quickly chalked up to standard chaotic red-carpet timing rather than real industry friction—Tyla is keeping her eyes firmly on the music. The global superstar is currently in the midst of her highly successful We Wanna Party Tour, which kicked off with a massive sold-out show at Tokyo’s Ariake Arena and has been packing out venues worldwide. Her recent partnership with South Korean entertainment giant HYBE has only added fuel to the fire, solidifying her status as a cross-continental power player who bridges African rhythm with global pop machinery.

But the true test of her reigning era arrives this winter. Tyla has officially announced that her highly anticipated second studio album, APop*, is scheduled to drop on July 24, 2026. The rollout is already proving to be a masterclass in sonic evolution. Following the massive success of the lead single "Chanel," which effortlessly scaled the Billboard charts, Tyla recently blessed fans with her second single, "She Did It Again," featuring Swedish pop powerhouse Zara Larsson. The track delivers a glossy, high-energy pop perfection while keeping that unmistakable, addictive South African pulse alive. For the home crowd in South Africa, it’s a moment of immense pride to watch a girl from home completely redefine what an international pop star looks and sounds like. For the rest of the world, it is a thrilling reminder that Tyla’s reign is nowhere near over—in fact, it’s only just begun.
